March 2022 marked a pivotal moment for our family as we packed up our belongings, our six-month-old baby, and our two giant golden retrievers to make the leap from Florida to Milledgeville, Georgia. It was a decision fueled by a desire for space, nature, and a slower pace of life—a decision that would lead us to discover our dream home in an unexpected way.
Our house-hunting journey in Milledgeville wasn’t without its twists and turns. Serendipitously, my parents, who live nearby, had actually scoped out the house we now call home months before we even considered moving. At the time, another couple had put it under contract, only to back out later—a stroke of luck that eventually brought us to its doorstep.
Nestled in a tranquil corner of Milledgeville, our new abode is a charming relic of the past, boasting nearly 40 years of history. Despite its undeniable beauty, the house had languished on the market for over a year, waiting for someone willing to take on the challenge it posed. And challenge it was—a fixer-upper in every sense of the word, with needs that extended beyond mere cosmetic touch-ups.
Since moving in, we’ve poured our hearts and sweat into restoring this gem to its former glory. From updating electricals to fixing drywall and painting, every corner of our home has seen its fair share of renovations. Yet, with each coat of paint and every repair made, we’ve come to appreciate the character and potential that initially drew us to this place.
While we’ve made significant strides in our renovation journey, our work is far from over. The to-do list remains ambitious, filled with projects big and small that promise to further enhance our living space. It’s a labor of love that we tackle together, celebrating each milestone achieved and learning valuable lessons along the way.
Living in Milledgeville has given us more than just a house; it’s given us a community and a sense of belonging. The welcoming spirit of our neighbors and the natural beauty that surrounds us have made this place feel like home from the moment we arrived. And as our little one grows and explores, and our dogs romp through the sprawling yard, we’re reminded daily of the blessings that come with embracing change and taking risks.
As we continue our journey in this quaint corner of Georgia, we look forward to sharing more tales of transformation, family adventures, and the joys of turning a house into a home. Stay tuned as we navigate the next chapter of our story—one hammer swing and paintbrush stroke at a time.
